What Is Computer-Based Non-Interactive Multimedia

As of 2010, the vast majority of information available online is non-interactive. Non-interactive information can refer either to static text and graphics or to streaming audio and video. Computer-based, non-interactive media is closely related to streaming media.

Non-Interactive

Non-interactive media is anything the user can't modify. The words in this article are non-interactive media. The same holds true for most graphics and videos. This isn't limited to the Internet, however. A sound file on your computer is also non-interactive media.

Interactive

Interactive media is the opposite of non-interactive: a .doc text file is interactive media because you can open and modify it. A picture is non-interactive in in some forms and interactive in others because you modify the image elements.

Identification

The rule for distinguishing interactive and non-interactive media is modifiability. A streaming video can be stopped, fast-forwarded, and rewound, which means that the interface is interactive. But unless the video itself can be modified, it's still considered non-interactive media.
